More information about the Sartorius STR2000 Fermenters and bioreactors are equipment used in the field of biotechnology and microbiology for the cultivation and production of various biological products, such as microorganisms, enzymes, and pharmaceuticals. These devices provide a controlled environment for the growth and metabolism of cells or microorganisms.
A fermenter is a type of bioreactor specifically designed for the fermentation process. It typically consists of a vessel or tank with an agitator to mix the culture medium and ensure uniform distribution of nutrients and oxygen. The fermenter also includes a temperature control system to maintain optimal growth conditions, as well as pH and dissolved oxygen sensors to monitor and regulate these parameters. Additionally, a fermenter may have a foam control system to prevent excessive foaming during fermentation.
On the other hand, a bioreactor is a broader term that encompasses various types of vessels used for different biological processes. While fermenters are specialized for fermentation, bioreactors can be used for a wider range of applications, including cell culture, tissue engineering, and bioconversion. Bioreactors can be classified based on their mode of operation, such as batch, fed-batch, or continuous, as well as their design, such as stirred-tank, airlift, or membrane bioreactors.
Both fermenters and bioreactors play a crucial role in industrial biotechnology, allowing for large-scale production of valuable products. They provide a controlled and sterile environment, enabling the optimization of growth conditions and the efficient production of desired compounds. These devices have revolutionized industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and biofuels, by enabling the cost-effective and sustainable production of various bioproducts.
